The Mountain Dry Stack wall was left for a few days to dry before starting to colour with the Wallstains.
Wallstains are available in 19 different colours and are seldom used neat. Wallstains are normally diluted with distilled water to achieve a natural opaque colour when applied to the wall, (to avoid a false painted look), and can be applied by sprayer or brush. In this instance the Wallstain was diluted at 1 part Wallstain to 10 parts distilled water.
It does not take long for the light application of Wallstain to dry and the different tones and depths of colour are achieved simply by applying another one or two coats (of the same colour) to chosen areas shortly after the original coat is applied. So, to keep it simple, only one colour was applied to the wall to achieve this natural looking mottled and variegated effect.
It is always preferable to apply Wallstain which is too dilute. An area can always be darkened with another coat, however it is more difficult to lighten an area which is too dark.
Believe it or not, the colouring process is probably the trickiest part of the whole job for most of us blokes! You have to bring out your artistic side! But, keep it simple, like we did in this example, and it is simple. Make the colouring process too complicated with loads of different colours and effects and yes, you’ve guessed it, it becomes complicated. But, as you gain experience, get the more complex colouring right and it can look GREAT!
Finally, once the wall is all coloured and it’s as you want it to look, it’s sealed with a light coat of Wallseal to enhance the colour and help protect the surface from weathering and dirt and protect its good looks.

Hopefully you’ll agree the finished effect looks good. Similar effects can be achieved by hand. Look out for the next video which shows a rock effect wall being created without any imprinting tools at all! You just need a textured skin, a carving tool, a good eye and a bit of imagination!
